Hello! My name is (Troy) Jaisohn Kim. I was born in Northern Virginia, about 30 minutes outside of D.C., and have lived there for my entire life. Growing up in a major transportation hub influenced my career desires from my childhood. My father is actively involved in the legislative side of transportation and encouraged me to pursue an engineering career in the industry after seeing my aptitude for math and science. I’ve interned at the U.S. Department of Transportation thrice (once at the main headquarters in D.C. and twice at a research facility in Northern Virginia); both experiences furthered my passion for developing tomorrow’s transit systems.
I graduated from Virginia Tech with a BS in Mechanical Engineering in Spring 2019. I am continuing my studies at Virginia Tech; as of Fall 2020, I’m a graduate student and plan to finish my Master’s (also in ME) in the coming spring. Afterwards, I am considering obtaining a doctorate in ME or looking to transition into the industry. My research mainly focuses on vehicle dynamics; I am interested in vehicle modeling and simulation, highway safety, automotive control strategies, vehicle-terrain interactions, connected vehicles, autonomous/intelligent vehicles, and V2X (vehicle-to-everything) communication.
I aspire to enter academia after graduate school. I’ve had the opportunity to teach some classes (see my Teaching page for more info) and have thoroughly enjoyed helping others learn. I also acknowledge the importance of research. Being able to push the boundaries of human knowledge excites me, especially in a rapidly growing field such as autonomous vehicle development. I am also considering working in an R&D facility after graduation to further contribute to the scientific community.
Outside of the classroom, I try to maintain an active lifestyle. I enjoy playing sports, running Spartan Races, reading, cooking, and traveling. Here are some fun facts about me:
